The Camp Complex

So when I arrived at college last semester I heard quite a few people comparing college to summer church camp.  At the time I blew off the comment.  But as I have started my second semester and especially as we have just finished spiritual emphasis week I really have started to see the validity of that statement.  Spiritual emphasis week really brings in the church camp feel as we have chapel every morning and then an extended service at night.  These services yield conversation of the quality of the speaker and so on and so forth.  Then there is the cafeteria aspect.  I mean I used to be able to deal with a week of sub par food, but string a few weeks together and it gets brutal.  Then of course there is the groggy morning breakfast that everyone goes to half asleep, yeah thats classic camp action.  There are the classes in the morning and early afternoon that you always go to at camp. But the afternoon is recreation time, lately I have been enjoying the racketball recreation the most.  We have also had basketball, where you play on teams with those you are staying with and then you get points, also known as inter-murals. Then of course there is the cabin arrangements.  You try to get in a cabin with as many people that you like as possible, much like dorms and roommates.  Then you stay up late every night with those guys doing absolutely nothing.  This whole idea of living life like I’m at camp has been really appealing as of late and so everything I have done I have related to camp.  My favorite of course is the excuse to be late for curfew on the weekend, its the last night of camp for the week so you have to sneak out.  So all in all college really is just like camp, only those classes are a little harder and a lot more expensive.  Of course there is the mass free time which can lead to boredom and thats when it hit me…photo-127.jpg

The President’s Man

Last fall I was a part of the Evangel football team.  I have decided that it would be in my best interest not to continue playing but instead to focus on academics, but that is another story all together.  So when I returned from Christmas break I had to go and tell the head coach that I would no longer be playing football.  That conversation went ok so I thought I would be in the clear.  However, I had forgotten about one thing,  the banquet.  The banquet for last year’s season was to be held the next week.  This put me in a very interesting position.  I wasn’t sure if I should go to the banquet or not since I was no longer on the team.  I debated this for a little then I decided that I would go.  I mean the worst that could happen is that I would get a good meal, which are in short supply here.  About a half an hour before the banquet was supposed to start my roommate asked me if I was ready to go.  I looked at him and shrugged and said yeah.  I was wearing sweats, the belichek hoody and a stocking hat.  He said I couldn’t go like that because everyone dresses up for the banquet.  I jumped in the shower quick to get my hair wet and threw on some chords and a sweater.  The food at the banquet was all that it was talked up to be and I was pleased with my decision to go and now I merely had to wait out the awards.  The banquet was winding down and the head coach said that they were now going to give out their three most prestigious awards.  He then proceeded to give out the MVP, and the Discipleship award.  The final award to be given out was the president’s award, which was to be given out by the EU president himself.  This award was to honor the highest GPA on the team.  This year there were two 4.0.  I figured it was only for those in upper level classes and laughed at how funny it would be if I got the award.  To my suprise however the president called my name out.  When I got up there I shook the president’s hand.  He was in a suite and so was the other award winner.  I looked at myself with casual chords and a sweater and my hair covering my face in an out of control manner.  Just then we posed for a picture and thats when it hit me… photo-126.jpg

The student has become the professor

I have always enjoyed solving a rubik’s cube.  It really isn’t as hard to solve as it seems. I learned a few patterns and then was able to solve a standard rubik’s cube in about two minutes.  A standard cube is a 3×3x3 and if your good you can solve it in under twenty seconds.  This summer however while I was with my family in California I came across a super rubik’s cube.  It was a 5×5x5 and was called the professor.  With a little prodding from my brother I bought it.  It was one of the most intimidating things I had ever started.  On the drive back from California I worked on it pretty much the entire way and was fairly close to solving it.  However, when I got to college last fall I suffered a major set back and was forced to start from scratch.  The part I had previously been able to solve went faster the second time but I was still thoroughly stumped as to how to solve the thing once and for all.  I came back this semester and decided I was gonna finish it so I began to work on it whenever I had free time.  In total it is hard to say the total number of hours that it took to finish.  Originally on the trip home from Cali I put in at least ten hours.  After my set back I must have put in another six.  Then this semester I spent about five hours on it and had made no progress whatsoever.  I eventually finished the entire last level in about twenty minutes.  When I finished there was no one around to celebrate with so I left it on my desk.  Later that night though I celebrated.  Its the first time I’ve lost my voice in a long time.  I was the official geek on the floor for the night.  Thats when it hit me… I guess we all have a little geek in us, some just have more than others.photo-90.jpg

A Lazy Sunday Afternoon

Now I guess this is a post that I could make every week since most of my Sundays are the same, but being that this is the first Sunday since the inception of my blog I thought that it would be right to discuss my normal Sunday afternoon schedule.  My Sundays start out going to church and then returning to campus to indulge in the weeks best meal at the cafeteria, chicken strips.  From there I try to get back to my room by one in the afternoon.  I then proceed to climb up my loft.  From there I take a “nap.”  My rule on Sundays is that I don’t set an alarm, instead I sleep until I can’t any longer.  Today I slept from 12:45-5:15.  That is four and a half hours.  Now technically speaking that is not considered a nap, as anything over four hours is no longer considered a nap.  Thus, I do not consider Sunday afternoon a nap but instead an extra night of sleep.  This extra night makes up for all of the sleep that I lose through out the week.  I regiment my whole day by not eating breakfast, which allows me to eat more at lunch which in turn allows me to sleep longer.  This lazy sunday afternoon is what essentially gets me through the week.  Thats when it hit me… next week is superbowl sunday, that means no nap, hopefully I survive.photo-100.jpg

A Late Christmas

photo-79.jpg

This all started last semester long before now.  The cafeteria was giving out free candy canes on your way out the door.  Like an astute college student I of course  grabbed one, I mean it was free.  But then I decided I would save it.  I mean when you get your hands on a delicious piece of candy you dont just want to waste it.  No, you want to save it for that time when you really need a pick me up… and so I did.  A few nights ago, I was once again just in my dorm, but I needed some food.  I tried cereal, a home made cookie, thought about a pop-tart, but then decided that the moment was right.  I was going to eat my candy cane.  I regret that i dont have a picture of my candy cane.  To be honest I didnt think that it would turn out to be quite so memorable.  But I think you can guess from the picture that this candy cane turned my lips, tongue and teeth completely blue.  I thought it was hilarious, laughing uncontrollably.  I was then called a little kid by multiple people likened to a two year old then a six year.  And thats when it hit me… I am just a little kid.
